Q: What is vermicular graphite cast iron
The tensile strength of vermicular graphite cast iron is
70% higher than that of gray cast iron,
slightly lower than that of ductile iron,
and it is an excellent material for structural parts.
In compacted graphite cast iron,
the number of graphite pellets increases,
the creep rate decreases, the strength and elongation increase,
and the thermal conductivity and shrinkage rate will deteriorate.
At present, the matrix of vermicular graphite iron
is still limited to ferrite and pearlite.
The vermicular graphite branches in the eutectic group of
vermicular graphite cast iron are developed,
and the carbon atoms in the molten iron
are similar to graphite during solidification,
and the matrix has a strong tendency to form ferrite.
Very similar to D-shaped graphite gray cast iron prone to ferrite.
In order to improve the tensile strength
and wear resistance of vermicular graphite cast iron,
methods such as alloying and normalizing
can be used to increase the amount of pearlite.
So to sum up: the tensile strength,
yield strength, elongation, hardness, etc.
of vermicular graphite cast iron are
determined by the vermicularization rate,
pearlite amount, graphite width-length ratio,
cementite amount, alloying elements,
number of inclusions and distribution, etc.
